Although stroke is often associated with older individuals, it can happen in children. Early identification and treatment can improve long-term outcomes and prevent another stroke.

Our pediatric neurologists can diagnose and treat this condition in children of all ages. We treat newborns, infants, school-age children and teens, including those with health conditions that increase stroke risk.

Stroke Symptoms in Children

A stroke happens when blood flow to an area of the brain is blocked. This blockage can be caused by a blood clot or broken blood vessel. Without proper blood flow, brain damage may occur.

Signs or symptoms in children may be sudden and include:

  • Difficulty communicating, such as talking or understanding others
  • Excessive sleepiness
  • Seizures
  • Severe headache, dizziness or vomiting
  • Tendency to use only one side of the body
  • Trouble walking
  • Vision changes
  • Weakness or numbness in the face, arm or leg, usually on one side

Pediatric Stroke Diagnosis, Treatment and Recovery

Quickly diagnosing a stroke and its underlying cause is essential to prevent complications, long-term effects and additional strokes.

If your child comes to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital with signs of a stroke, we have a specific protocol to expedite their diagnosis. Your neurologist talks to you and your child about their symptoms, health history, recent illnesses and injuries. The doctor examines your child to look for signs of stroke and may order additional tests to diagnose the cause of the stroke.

Treatment depends on the cause of the stroke. Your neurologist works with other specialists as needed to individualize your child’s care plan. We aim to help your child regain as much function as possible and will follow up with you and your child throughout their recovery.
